Panama Canal

Nearly 100 years after its completion the Panama Canal remains one of the greatest feats of human achievement in history, often referred to as 'The eighth wonder of the world' with a history as scarred as the landscape it navigates.

The history of the Panama Canal is fraught with tragedy, with building work carried out under Spanish kings, conquistadors and five different American presidents over a period of 400 years.

The Panama Canal is a truly exhilarating experience as six immense locks raise the ship by 85 feet from sea level, before gently lowering it once more, usually with just inches to spare.

The history of the canal is fraught with triumphs, tragedies and stories of heroism whilst this engineering marvel was completed.

During its construction literally thousands of people died from disease and exhaustion.

The Panama Canal cruise season runs from September to April, with the best time to visit after the rainy season ends in November.
