Australasia

It's another world down under, where the Southern Cross rules the night sky, where tiny creatures built a reef you can see from space, where animals carry their babies in pouches and mammals lay eggs, where Christmas is in the summertime and celebrated with barbies on the beach, and where water spins the opposite way down the plughole (or maybe not?).

Take a cruise to this part of the world and you are in a region which used to be part of Antarctica in dinosaur times, when Antarctica was a noisy and verdant forest (look at any evergreen Araucaria pine or coniferous podocarp tree or shrub, and you are looking at present-day Antarctic plant-life). Later Australasia broke free and drifted north into a new era of eucalyptus and acacia trees, of gliding possums, spiny anteaters, venomous platypus, crab-eating macaques and tree kangaroo.

From Darwin in the Northern Territories, to Cairns and Brisbane on Queensland's eastern coast, from Melbourne at the southern tip of Victoria and west to Adelaide and Kangaroo island, Australia shows you a continent's worth of mountains, waterfalls, sandy beaches and national parks.

Meanwhile, across the Tasman Sea to the south-east, the jaw-dropping Lord of the Rings landscapes of New Zealand beckon, along with great cities like Auckland, Dunedin and Christchurch, whale-spotting in the Bay of Islands and 'swim with the dolphins' boat tours at Akaroa, and the spectacular falls and fjords of Milford Sound, named in 2008 as the world's top travel destination and called by Rudyard Kipling the 'eighth wonder of the world'.
