Columbus Launch and Naming Ceremony

Tuesday, June 13, 2017 2:53 PM

Michaela and I travelled to Tilbury to attend the naming of Columbus and subsequent celebrations, which included a delicious five course gala dinner and spectacular firework display.

Columbus may be familiar to some as she has formerly been known as Ocean Village and P&O Cruise’s previous Arcadia; she then had a spell in Australia as the Pacific Pearl.  She still has the swim-up bar and generous cabins with the walk-in wardrobe area but has received a refreshing make over with many new carpets evident. The cabinetary and bathroom décor was showing signs of age but was clean and did not detract from her many attributes.

For me, she is an ideal size at 63 786 tonnes, large enough to offer a range of facilities, activities, entertainment and space but to still offer that intimate and personal experience.

Due to travelling down from the North West of England and traffic out of London to Tilbury, we did not get as much time as we’d hoped to fully explore all the ship had to offer. With an extensive schedule planned to celebrate her naming, we ensured that we embraced the opportunity to witness the entertainment offered and soak up the atmosphere of the celebrations.

The service was attentive and friendly, the gala dinner was well presented and superb. The entertainment was enjoyable and the cabin well appointed. I am pleased this ship is back to offering cruises to the British market as I believe she has a lot to offer and many passengers will enjoy her forthcoming cruise programme.
